What we set.
What you control.
This page lists every cookie 4uit.ca uses, what it does, how long it lives, and how to turn it off. Plain English. No dark patterns. The non-essentials are off by default until you explicitly opt in.
1 · What cookies are
Cookies are small text files a website asks your browser to store. They let the site remember things between page loads (essential), measure traffic (analytics), or follow you across sites (advertising). We use them — sparingly — for the first two. We don't use them for the third.
A few similar technologies (browser storage, pixel tags, beacons) work like cookies and are covered by this policy.
2 · The four categories
Essential
Required for the site to work. Cannot be disabled. No tracking. Currently the site doesn't set persistent essential cookies on its own — these only appear if you submit a form (anti-spam token), use the support portal (session cookie), or pass through Cloudflare (security). All are first-party or strictly functional.
Analytics
Help us understand which pages get used so we can improve them. Off by default. Only set after you click "Accept analytics" (or "Accept all") on the cookie banner. Can be turned off again at any time.
Functional
Remember your preferences (e.g., your cookie-consent choice itself, dark/light if we ever add a toggle). Off by default for non-consent preferences. Always-on for the consent record itself, since we have to remember whether you've consented or not.
Marketing
We currently don't use marketing cookies. If we add them in future (e.g., for a Google Ads campaign), they'll appear in this list with a clear opt-in.
3 · The cookie list
Every cookie set by 4uit.ca, the third party that sets it, and what it does:
| Name | Set by | Purpose | Expiry | Category |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4uit_consent | 4uit.ca (first-party) | Records your cookie-banner choice | 12 months | Essential |
| 4uit_consent_v1 | 4uit.ca (browser localStorage) | Mirror of consent record (used when third-party cookies are blocked) | Until cleared | Essential |
| _ga | Google Analytics | Distinguishes unique users | 2 years | Analytics (opt-in) |
| _ga_* | Google Analytics | Persists session state for GA4 | 2 years | Analytics (opt-in) |
| _gid | Google Analytics | Distinguishes users (24h rolling) | 24 hours | Analytics (opt-in) |
| _gat | Google Analytics | Throttles request rate | 1 minute | Analytics (opt-in) |
| __cf_bm | Cloudflare | Bot management — distinguishes humans from bots | 30 minutes (rolling) | Essential (security) |
Some cookies above only appear if you've enabled the relevant category. Cloudflare's `__cf_bm` only sets if our DNS is on Cloudflare; if we move off, this row drops out.
4 · How we get consent
Per Quebec's Law 25 and PIPEDA's consent expectations, we set non-essential cookies only after explicit consent. On your first visit you'll see a cookie banner with three buttons:
- Accept all — turns on analytics
- Reject non-essential — only essentials run; nothing tracks you
- Customise — pick category by category
Whatever you pick is recorded in 4uit_consent for 12 months. You can change your mind anytime by clicking "Cookie settings" in the footer.
5 · How to control cookies
Beyond our banner, you can manage cookies in your browser:
You can also opt out of Google Analytics across all sites with the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
If you block all cookies: the site still works for browsing. The cookie banner may reappear on each visit (because we can't remember your "no" without a cookie). Form submissions may be slower because some anti-spam checks rely on cookies.
6 · Do Not Track
We honour the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal where your browser sends one. We don't honour the older Do Not Track (DNT) header because the standard was never finalised and most browsers no longer set it meaningfully.
7 · Changes to this policy
If we add or remove cookies, this page is updated and the effective date at the top changes. For material additions (e.g., a new third-party tracker), we re-prompt for consent.
